2 The General Context for Reform Senta A. Raizen In this chapter, we provide the backdrop for the eight innovations we studied— what gave rise to the drive for improving education in general and science and mathematics education in grades K- 12 in particular. We note some general reform directions, how they affected the eight innovations, and, in turn, how they were affected by them. The major themes that developed from our research, referred to briefly in this chapter, are discussed in greater detail in succeeding chapters.
What changes in teachers’ roles in or out of the classroom occurred in connection with the collaborative? Bold Ventures: Science and Mathematics Innovations 15 During the spring of 1994, a major site visit of three to five days was made to each of the five collaboratives. The main purposes of the major site visits were to collect data that would inform the themes emerging in the ongoing analysis and to immerse the researchers in the context of the collaborative sites. The visits included interviews with teachers and other participants from all the sectors, as well as observations of mathematics classrooms and collaborative activities.
The combined perspective of the research team was viewed as a critical filter for eliminating the biases and preconceptions of each individual researcher. Writing was a vital component of the analysis and construction of the UMC case study. During the three years of the study, several hundred pages were written in the form of reports, memos, and draft documents. The writing process served as a vehicle to record questions, insights, impressions, and results of interim analysis. The nature, strength, or lack of evidence for change and for claims only became fully apparent during the writing process.
