By Mansoor Niaz
This booklet explores the connection among the content material of chemistry schooling and the background and philosophy of technological know-how (HPS) framework that underlies such schooling. It discusses the necessity to current a picture that displays how chemistry built and progresses. It proposes that chemistry could be taught how it is practiced by way of chemists: as a human firm, on the interface of clinical perform and HPS. ultimately, it units out to persuade academics to head past the normal lecture room perform and discover new instructing thoughts.
The value of HPS has been famous for the technological know-how curriculum because the heart of the 20th century. the necessity for instructing chemistry inside of a ancient context isn't obscure as HPS isn't some distance under the skin in any technology school room. A overview of the literature indicates that the conventional chemistry school room, curricula, and textbooks whereas facing suggestions equivalent to legislations, thought, version, rationalization, speculation, commentary, facts and idealization, usually forget about parts of the heritage and philosophy of technological know-how. This booklet proposes that the conceptual realizing of chemistry calls for wisdom and knowing of the background and philosophy of science.
“Professor Niaz’s e-book is such a lot welcome, coming at a time while there's an urgently felt have to improve the educating of technology. The e-book is a giant relief for including to the standard means - offering technological know-how as a sequence of mere evidence - additionally the mandatory mandate: to teach how technological know-how is completed, and the way technology, via its background and philosophy, is a part of the cultural improvement of humanity.”
Gerald Holton, Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics & Professor of background of technological know-how, Harvard University
“In this stimulating and complicated mixture of heritage of chemistry, philosophy of technology, and technology pedagogy, Professor Mansoor Niaz has succeeded in delivering a promising new method of the instructing of basic rules in chemistry. Historians and philosophers of chemistry --- and primarily, chemistry teachers --- will locate this ebook filled with priceless and hugely usable new ideas”
Alan Rocke, Case Western Reserve University
“This e-book artfully connects chemistry and chemistry schooling to the human context within which chemical technological know-how is practiced and the old and philosophical history that illuminates that perform. Mansoor Niaz deftly weaves jointly old episodes within the quest for clinical wisdom with the psychology of studying and philosophical reflections at the nature of clinical wisdom and strategy. the result's a compelling case for traditionally and philosophically educated technological know-how schooling. hugely recommended!”
Harvey Siegel, college of Miami
“Books that study the philosophy and heritage of technology in Chemistry are fairly infrequent. ‘Chemistry schooling and Contributions from background and Philosophy of technology’ via Mansoor Niaz is among the infrequent books at the background and philosophy of chemistry and their value in instructing this technological know-how. The e-book is going via all of the major options of chemistry, and analyzes the ancient and philosophical advancements in addition to their reflections in textbooks.
Closest to my center is bankruptcy 6, that is dedicated to the chemical bond, the glue that holds jointly all subject in our earth. The bankruptcy emphasizes the innovative effect of the concept that of the ‘covalent bond’ at the chemical neighborhood and the nice novelty of the concept that was once conceived eleven years sooner than quantum mechanics was once capable of provide the mechanism of electron pairing and covalent bonding. the writer is going then to explain the emergence of 2 rival theories that defined the character of the chemical bond when it comes to quantum mechanics; those are valence bond (VB) and molecular orbital (MO) theories. He emphasizes the significance of getting rival theories and interpretations in technological know-how and its development. He additional argues that this VB-MO contention continues to be alive and jointly the 2 conceptual frames function the device equipment for pondering and doing chemistry in artistic manners. the writer surveys chemistry textbooks within the mild of the how the books safeguard or now not the stability among the 2 theories in describing quite a few chemical phenomena. This Talmudic procedure of conceptual rigidity is a common attribute of any department of evolving knowledge. As such, Mansoor’s ebook will be of serious software for chemistry lecturers to ascertain how can they develop into more beneficial academics by means of spotting the significance of conceptual tension”.

Science, Evidence, and Inference in Education
Examine on schooling has come into the political highlight because the call for grows for trustworthy and credible info for the advice of coverage and perform within the schooling reform setting. Aus den Besprechungen: ". .. Das Buch ist in einer sehr guten Didaktik geschrieben. Dadurch wird dem Leser das Verst? ndnis des oft komplizierten Geschehens im Halbleiter leicht verst? ndlich gemacht. Ohne die Exaktheit darunter leiden zu lassen, werden so die wesentlichen Zusammenh? nge, verbunden mit den wichtigsten mathematischen Beziehungen, dargestellt.

Historians of science have devoted considerable time and effort to understanding this episode (Heilbron and Kuhn 1969; Lakatos 1970).
Holton (1978a) wondered about Ehrenhaft’s response if he had had access to Millikan’s notebook: “If Ehrenhaft had obtained such data, he would probably not have neglected the second observations [that did not give the expected value of the elementary electrical charge] and many others like it in these two notebooks that shared the same fate; he would very likely have used them all” (pp. 209–210). Teaching science as practiced by scientists can indeed be an important objective of science education (Niaz 2010).
Recent research has also drawn attention to the importance of philosophy of chemistry (Weisberg et al. 2011). This leads to the question: Should we follow philosophy of chemistry or the application of history and philosophy of science to understand progress in chemistry (for further details, see Niaz 2012b)? This book has followed the second approach, without of course denying the importance of philosophy of chemistry. Bensaude-Vincent (2014), a leading scholar in the history of chemistry and philosophy of science, has provided sound advice: This paper advocates an integration of chemistry into the philosophy of science, but it does not encourage a disciplinary partition of the field.
