A lot of people who make hundreds of thousands of dollars today don't know how to manage it and have nothing to show for it.
That's the opposite of what takes place today, when a lot of parents live their own successes or failures in sports through their kids. My Dad was never like that. He resented me for playing at first because he didn't think it was important. He felt I should be working instead. After awhile he accepted me playing, as long as I did my work first. I remember a few times in the summer when I'd slip off to play ball for a few hours when I still had work to do at home. I always made sure I was home before my Dad, because if he had caught me playing when there was work still to be done he would've whipped my butt.
That's probably why enjoy "riding" so much today. As parents you never want to admit that your son is a man, all grown up, out on his own. My Dad was pretty realistic. And I give him more credit now than did at the time. I was about 17 years old when he first let me drive the car to my brother Willie's Page 21 house in town. I guess that's when he figured that I was growing up and he gave me a little bit more rope. You have to understand though, that if my parents said be home by 12 o'clock, I was home by 12 o'clock.
