Below I will present four cases: two of childhood disability, one of a 45-yearold ex-miner, and one of an elderly stroke patient. I selected this range of material to highlight the importance of age in health-related contexts. I have supplemented my discussion of each narrative with reference to similar cases which point out common themes and alternative outcomes. Together all these stories highlight themes about family, community, and health that will be traced historically through the rest of the book.
Cases of debility are always complex because they provide a site in which the latent socioeconomic, physical, cultural, and moral planes of a society intersect in explicit ways. The value of examining narratives such as those below lies not only in what they tell us about the situations in which large numbers of people ¤nd themselves but also what they show us of the outlines of community and the mechanisms and semantics of social relations in action. These cases show what happens when that which is normal and expected—the birth of a child, earning a wage, marriage, building a new home, a mother’s aging—become “abnormal” and contested.
