On Cook's voyages, the art and science of representing "unknown" peoples was folded into this disciplinary regime. The Admiralty and Royal Society sought an "undistorted," empirical appreciation of the world. Yet in order to maintain these forms of discipline, Cook had to delegate responsibility. He had to encourage his officers to keep detailed logs so that he might consult them to flesh out his own observations, base his dealings with Native peoples on a division of labour, and plan for the possibility of attack.
