On Cook's voyages, the art and science of representing "unknown" peoples was folded into this disciplinary regime. The Admiralty and Royal Society sought an "undistorted," empirical appreciation of the world. Yet in order to maintain these forms of discipline, Cook had to delegate responsibility.
