Father Sun and Mother Earth are understood as a metaphor: just as the sun and the earth are necessary for life as we understand it, so are Father Sun and Mother Earth necessary for people as we understand them to be. The chain of being established in creation places people not at the apex, as in Western derived civilizations, but rather in a position of vulnerability. Apaches aver that people do not and cannot exist without all that which preceded our coming into being. Parallel to current Western understanding of evolution, as well as having much in common with Genesis, in the beginningtime celestial objects and the earth were first created.
There are not enough jobs for those who wish to stay on the reservation, especially for the young and well-educated. There is pressure to acculturate to mainstream American society and contrary pressure to maintain a traditional base. There is all this and more at Mescalero today; although none of it appears here, this book is not a whitewash job. My goal is to present the religious and philosophical systems, rooted in Page 5 astronomy, that underlie the ideal way of behaving and some examples of that ideal in action.
These notes are later checked with some of the participants and, when possible, with other observers. My notebooks are, and always have been, open to the Mescalero Apache people. In 1974, ten years after that first field experience watching the painting of the Mountain God dancers, I returned to the reservation with my then twelve-year-old daughter.
