Equally ominous is the potential impact of these demographic changes on the future science and technology workforce. Professional and technical jobs 16 THE EMERGENCE OF PEOPLE-CENTERED PLACES are growing most rapidly, and they are critical to the growth of knowledge businesses and industries. Traditionally non-Hispanic white males have formed the bulk of the science and technology workforce (65 percent in 1997), while the labor force of the future will be predominantly women and minorities (National Science and Technology Council 2000).
As discussed above, WIBs were given the unprecedented opportunity to provide strategic leadership and policy development for the entire workforce system.
