In many south-east Asian areas during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, more than 10 per cent of the pre-industrial population was urbanised, which was more than in contemporary Europe (Basu, 1979).

Comparative studies of urban functional change are relatively uncommon, as is work on urban iconography (Bonet Correa, 1978). Finally, studies of the archival material relating to the mid-eighteenth century Catastro del Marqués de Ensenada for some ports relating to the Respuestas Generales have also been published in a series known as Alcábala del Viento by Tabapress.
