This 16-page tour guide describes the river's 1539 discovery by explorer De Soto and the sights to be seen along the 300 5 miles of river paralleled by the railroad. ·~ 8 General Electric U28B near Pueblo, Colorado, leads a Burlington freight train in July 1971. ROBBER BARON BOOM 45 n 1859, the Chicago, St. Paul & Fond du Lac was reorganized as the Chicago & North Western Railroad. In 1865, C&NW merged with the Galena & Chicago Union, which had operated Chicago's first train in 1848. In 1866, C&NW leased-and later bought-the Chicago & Milwaukee Railway running between its namesake cities.
The Depression simplified the task of erecting the wires as fewer trains interfered with construction. Everything needed-from wages to copper wire-was less expensive. By 1937, electric trains roamed the Pennsylvania from New York City to Washington, D. , and as far west as Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In an era when most electric locomotives looked like shoe boxes on wheels, the Pennsylvania's model GG 1 was astonishing for its beautiful streamlining. The first GG 1 was delivered in 1934 and 139 units would be built.
