A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary
From the bestselling writer of The paintings of shuttle comes a wittily interesting exploration of the unusual "non-place" that he believes is the innovative heart of our civilization.
Given exceptional entry to at least one of the world's busiest airports as a "writer-in-residence," Alain de Botton came upon it to be a show off for lots of of the main crosscurrents of the fashionable world--from our religion in know-how to our destruction of nature, from our international interconnectedness to our romanticizing of the unique. Drainage requirements often conflict with separation and filtration criteria that must also be satisfied (Chapter 6) to prevent soil migration and piping. Subballast saturation is a common problem that is often ignored. This results from inadequate drainage of the subballast layer from conditions such as the formation of subgrade settlement depressions that trap water or subballast gradation that makes the subballast inadequately permeable. Under repeated wheel/rail forces, significant deformation and even rapid failure can occur in the subballast layer when drainage is impeded.
Although ballasted track is normally very stable with a considerable lateral strength reserve to resist imposed stresses, when ballast is newly placed or if it has been disturbed by maintenance (tamping or tie replacement), lateral resistance of the track may only be half of its value compared to when it is compacted (Li and Shust 1999; Sussmann et al. 2003b). Resumed traffic following the maintenance will lead to gradual ballast recompaction and eventual restoration of its lateral strength and track buckling resistance.
