Needless to say, ideas of this kind, which proliferated at the time, disappeared soon after, swept away by the cleansing action of common sense. Others came to take their place, however, proving that ‘blaming the victim’ may be an indelible part of human nature. The press, which fuelled most of the public debates, played up the more striking and enigmatic side of the epidemic, and especially the almost direct association the disease seemed to forge between the twin taboos of sex and death. In its issue of 15 June 1983 Veja carried a feature under the title ‘O Enigma que Mata’ (The Enigma that Kills).
In Brazil it has been complicated further by yet another set of circumstances: by a specific historical moment, and, in particular, a complicated set of social and political transformations that have profoundly influenced the ways in which Brazilian society has responded to the AIDS epidemic. Perhaps even more than the factors that we have examined thus far—or, at the very least, interacting with them—it is this historical context that has shaped what we might describe as the politics of AIDS in Brazil.
