The economy is also challenging, because its components are part of a complex process that promises rich rewards. This chapter explains how Sweden has become a major player in the world economy. Sweden’s wealth results from the effective use of its resources, the development of world-class industries, and extensive welfare and service systems.
Most emigrants came from poor, overpopulated farmlands in the south. Some left to avoid the military draft, whereas many were sharecroppers or hired farm workers looking for opportunity in America. From 1860 to 1880, Sweden experienced crop failures, depression, and a declining standard of living. Free and open lands, jobs, railroad propaganda, and letters from friends in the United States made emigration very appealing to the landless farmer. The Homestead Act of 1862 was the ultimate attraction.
These early occupants were hunters and fishers, who migrated seasonally across the land with all their possessions. Evidence of their presence can still be found on the landscape in cairns (stone monuments) and petroglyphs (rock carvings). Their stone tools are also displayed in several museums across Sweden. One significant example of their imprint on the cultural landscape is at Skegriedösen, the site of a massive Stone Age burial mound unique to southern and western Sweden. The next arrivals came from present-day Denmark.
