But enough of all that. We have another train to catch. A short man with a grey moustache and a possibly recycled uniform directs us to Platform 19. In two minutes we are there, and two minutes after that, a pink and grey SNCB double-decker train arrives, looking like a long sleek slug. Very soon we are away, sitting on the upper deck, taking in the huge gold dome of the Palais de Justice, a block of flats with a painting of a snake attached to a politician’s head, and a terrace of buildings with sculptures of angels on the roofs.
But who knows how people in the Low Countries like to spend their money? The Antwerp Fashion Map tells us that Dries van Noten is one of the Antwerp Six. While this may sound like some sort of group wrongly convicted for terrorism, the Antwerp Six is in fact a set of six fashion designers who rose to fame in the city in the 1980s, when they created a distinctive pushing-theboundaries look that brought the city to the attention of the world’s fashionistas.
