11). The Course Syllabus A course syllabus is a description of all important aspects of a course, to be distributed to students on the first day of class. It is a form of contract between the instructor and students and should be prepared with care. Appleby (1994) points out that a syllabus, in addition to providing necessary practical information, gives an impression of an instructor’s approach to teaching. It indicates what kinds of activities are considered important, and even the tone of the syllabus might suggest how approachable you are.
The implication here is that an instructor needs to decide how often, and how formally to check students’ learning. An instructor will decide, formally or informally, on the relative importance of different aspects of knowledge about a topic. That is, for any topic in any course, an instructor will care more or less about whether students learn one or another aspect of topical material. For example, instructors are likely to care very much that students learn basic concepts. Instructors might well care not as much that students, at the undergraduate level, can explain a theory.
Goldwater and Acker (1975) found that adding weekly quizzes with a mastery criterion to a fixed-pace course improved student learning. Also, the role of an instructor is different in the two types of courses. In a student-paced course, because students will be at different points of progress, Page 11 class lectures or discussions are difficult to schedule. Consequently, lectures play little or no role, and students learn course material largely on their own. Instructors might offer lectures on different topics, but every lecture will be appropriate for only a fraction of the students.
