In 1708, for example, the Cherokees sold fifty thousand skins to traders; by 1735, deerskin sales totaled one million. In addition to deerskins, traders bought war captives from Cherokees. These captives were Indians of other tribes whom the Cherokees had captured. Traditionally, most of them would have been tortured or killed, but traders offered to buy them. Warriors relinquished their captives to traders, who sent them to Charleston, where they were sold as slaves. These Indian slaves worked alongside African slaves on rice and tobacco plantations in the American colonies or on sugar plantations in the West Indies.

In exchange for the chiefs, the governor demanded the surrender of all Cherokees who had killed Englishmen and all Frenchmen who lived in Cherokee towns. A few concessions by the Cherokees prompted the governor to release the war chief Oconostota and two others. In February 1760, Oconostota laid siege to Fort Prince George. After several weeks, he sent word that he wanted a conference with the fort’s commander. When the lieutenant in charge stepped from the stockade, Oconostota signaled his warriors to attack.
