Most other producers have similar systems, although there is greater emphasis on controlling production in Norway than in other producing countries. It is also worthwhile to note that, as mentioned above, on the west coast of Canada there was a moratorium on new licences from 1995 to 2002, and environmental concerns make it very difficult for the industry to grow.
Changes in the quality of inputs or their prices can also change the mix of input factors. The distinction between productivity growth for farmers and their suppliers is often not made, and combined it is somewhat imprecisely referred to as productivity growth for the whole industry. In addition, although the focus is generally on the process of actually producing salmon, productivity growth in the distribution chain to retailers is equally important. This is because consumers are primarily interested in the final price for a product of any given quality, and whether a price reduction is due to better input factors or better logistics is of little importance.
