D. Another eminent poet of this family was Gofraidh Fionn 6 Dalaigh, most of whose poems were addressed to the earls of Desmond. Perhaps the best known of these poems is "M6r ar bhfearg riot, a rf Saxan" ("Great our anger with you, 0 king of the Saxons"), a poem composed in honor of Maurice FitzMaurice, second earl of Desmond. His poem "Mairg mheallas muirn an tsaoghail" was one of the most popular religious poems in Ireland for centuries. In the verses beginning, "Fili Eireann go haonteach," he celebrated the famous festival organized for all the poets of Ireland by O'Kelly of Hy Many during Christmas 1351.
At length Fionn catches up with them, but Aonghus an Bhrogha makes peace between them. But Fionn is not to be trusted. Diarmaid is wounded to the death by the boar of Ben Ghulban, but he may be saved by a drink of water from Fionn's hands. He implores Fionn to fetch a handful of water from a nearby spring . Fionn goes to the spring, but when returning with the water he thinks of Grainne, and he allows the water to run through his fingers, and so Diarmaid dies. Although the oldest extant manuscript copy of the story of Diarmaid and Grainne is a rather late one of the seventeenth century, it is certain that the tale itself is much older.

They supplanted almost entirely the Ulster tales in popularity. The reasons for this are, no doubt, that they possess a much greater variety of char- 26 DICTIONARY OF IRISH LITERATURE acters and lack the stark tragic quality of the Ulster cycle.
