It has to be said also that the social division of labour is not highly advanced among the Gnau; their methods of treating the sick, which assume competence upon the part of all adults, are not unusual in terms of the rest of their social organization, in which most skills are generalized (Lewis, 1976). There is, however, a clear division of labour between the sexes. ‘The distribution of most job activities is segregated according to sex’ (Lewis, 1975, p. 340). This, along with the rules and customs connected with marriage and reproduction, constitutes what I would refer to as a clear gender order.

These are crucial issues for the reproduction of our society, not only at the biological level but at the social level also. It is proposed that once again medicine and science are actively involved in recreating the power and authority structures of the society, but that those who are doing the re-creation are inadequately informed of the possible unintended consequences of their apparently humane actions. In studying our own society, so far from being in danger of ‘going native’ we are already native.

The notions of power and powers are something to which we shall find ourselves constantly returning as the arguments of this book develop. Horton makes too little (as Dingwall, 1976, has argued briefly) of the various ways in which Western scientific thought is less than open in practice. While Horton is correct to argue that the structure of Western science is by definition open, he underplays its closedness in relation to the bulk of the lay population. He recognizes that there is a difference in the Western world between scientists and lay people who have not been trained in scientific method and have not seen scientific proof.
