It has claimed the attention of American folklorists since the 1950s. I have acknowledged most of those I interviewed in the bibliographic notes. I wish everyone could know Wiregrass Country firsthand. It is a captivating land with a praiseworthy spirit. Page xv INTRODUCTION Wiregrass Country, a historic region of the South, begins above Savannah and sweeps across rolling meadows into the southwest Georgia coastal plain, fanning over into the southeastern corner of Alabama and dipping down into the northwestern panhandle of Florida. Wiregrass (Aristida stricta) depends on fire ecology to germinate.
I also thank J. Anthony Paredes for redirecting my insights about southeastern Indians. I owe a great debt of gratitude to the series editor, William Lynwood Montell, for his unwavering faith in my work. Others whom I must mention (they will know why) include Roland Freeman, Worth Long, Gerald Davis, Bruce Bickley, and John Roberts. I received collaborative assistance with chapter 2 from Jerry DeVine. Hank Willett provided the bulk of material on the African American Sacred Harp music tradition in chapter 4.
